New Video: retropxssy - Taste
Here we are for another day of tangible concern and frustration on the internet; the reflection of societies ills displayed at ever-increasing increments of clarity. It's only been a week or so since the release of Louis Theroux's Inside the Manosphere on Netflix and not for the first time, the alarming rise of hate-fueled, misogynistic content is in the spotlight.
The 'Manosphere' refers to a network of websites, forums and influencers advocating a return to 'traditional' gender stereotypes - where men are dominant 'Alphas' and women are subservient to their needs. They often sell courses to followers promising to show how any man can get anything he wants at life; the trappings of wealth and the sexual dominance over women at the top of the list of aspirations. It's an exploitative pyramid scheme that makes these creators millions, perpetuates lies and leads to potentially violent, abusive and life-threatening consequences.
In 2025, the award-winning drama Adolescence highlighted the detrimental impact of this content and how it's influence is spreading to vulnerable young men and boys feeling left behind. Of course none of this is good news for anyone, but ultimately women and girls will feel the brunt of it the most. It's one thing to show the toxicity of these influencers and followers via documentary and drama, but another thing entirely to be able to turn the tide. Art must continue to play it's part.
In music, voices are getting frequent and more amplified on this subject - showing the reality of real life for women and girls - and one such artist is retropxssy. The London based artist released her excellent second album I Haven't Told Anybody in October 2025; blending influences as varied as Hip Hop, Drum & Bass, Pop and Rock that compliment her dark tales of modern life. 'Taste' is one of the highlights of the album, taking it's roots in the soulful Drum & Bass and Trip-Hop that retropxssy grew up listening to. The track is about the dichotomy that faces women and girls on an almost daily basis. 'Taste' now has a new video, once again working with long-time collaborator Joejas (see below).
retropxssy was keen to elaborate further on the video:
" 'Taste' is about the danger I feel as a woman being out at night, outside at all..just being. The damage that internalised anxiety causes.A lost driver is surprised by an apparition dressed in a ballgown. The roles are shifted, tonight she holds the power."
