New Video: Georgian - Learning to Forget

It's amazing how much information we encounter on a daily basis and how much of it passes us by or is lost in a short amount of time. The human brain is capable of some truly impressive feats, yet its capacity to remember is flawed. Recent research has noted that approximately 56% of information is forgotten within an hour, 66% after a day and 75% after six days. Then of course, that only gets worse as you get older and the cognitive abilities start to erode.

Now what was I doing again?

Oh yeah! Manchester based outfit Georgian are a band that have turned a few heads in the last year with previous singles 'Big Lips in Leather' and 'Soleil', and now they have returned with their third effort 'Learning To Forget' via the ever reliable Heist or Hit. Formed and fronted by talented singer/ songwriter Georgia McKiernan, she enlisted Harry George, James Poole, James Polglase and Connor Alder to bring out a sound that is forward thinking, yet simultaneously doused in nostalgic nods to the past.

Produced and recorded in Amsterdam, the single shows a band not willing to rest on their laurels. Starting with an intimate, cosy glow, 'Learning to Forget' takes a dark and brooding turn - building in emotive intensity as the track progresses - taking as much inspiration from stirring Post Rock as it does from Folk and Psychedelia. McKiernan has a timeless quality to her voice that doesn't need to resort to vocal affectations to fill in the blanks and the band have found a way of complimenting this enviable asset with a consummate, instinctive feel to their backing.

The video uses Manchester's striking backdrop as another visual element to the track, the slate gray Victorian architecture blending with modern buildings shadowing the feel of song. It explores how pain can often be the most striking in social situations and how memories can sneak up on you unsolicited, uninvited and unwanted.

About the song, McKiernan said this:

" 'Learning to Forget' has a true Georgian structure, from starting quite slow, melancholic and reflective, to progressing to a heavy, distorted and powerful sound - expect the unexpected! The song itself discusses heartbreak and how you can be so eager to forget everything when a relationship ends. Even though you don't want the memories and small reminders of that person, they still happen."

There are situations in life where we yearn to forget and - just like in the Charlie Kaufman-written, Michel Gondry-directed classic Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind - people we would like to erase from our consciousness that much quicker. Perhaps the pain and time is needed for us to learn to forget. In Georgian's case, this is some of key information you'll want to hang on to.
