New Video: Oscar Mic - Sun Star
Human Beings are a funny bunch. I'm convinced it's our cross to bare that to have such inquisitive, creative capabilities, we must also be wrapped up in our own reflection or how we can manipulate how others see us. So wrapped up in the here and now, rarely able to see beyond the end of the day, let alone a perceived foreseeable future. How often in life do we truly see the bigger picture? Of course, writing about it doesn't do anything to change it. If it did, I'd probably have a Sunday Times Best Seller and a minor drug problem on my hands.
Being wrapped up in your own reflection is not all it's cracked up to be, but being able to reflect on the self with an open and honest approach can be beneficial. It makes a great theme for popular music too.
Oscar Mic are a trio from East London that manage to fuse elements of different musical styles, playing around - loose and fancy free - with genre conventions to make something fresh. After crafting his sound as a one-man band where onlookers looked on perplexed at gigs, Seamus Hayes welcomed old friend Taan Parker on drums and bass player Rez Erex - a music enthusiast and lover of tangible riffs. It's been a time of slow progress for the band, but finally the time has come for them to release their first single as a band. The first fruit of their creative union is the beautifully crafted 'Sun Star'.
It's a song that fizzes with anxiety, yet finds time for a beat that will worm it's way into your consciousness. Hayes makes a fascinating front man; crackling with charm and charisma yet also vulnerable. It's here where the theme of internal analysis becomes apparent. Speaking about the track, he says:
"The song starts with what seems like an apology. It's been a crazy year of self-reflection and self-improvement and I owe most of it to my girlfriend. The verses are in some way directed to her.
'Red Killer Mars' is about the impact of relentless wars and the innocents that suffer
The Sun Star may represent the opposite of Killer Mars; creativity and enlightenment. I've been learning about astrophysics and quantum dynamics recently. It makes everything else seem a little absurd"
The track is accompanied by a video directed by Dovile Meilute, which features the band playing in the midst of a bright and stimulating trip. It looks like Andy Warhol prints have come to life; the Summer of Love fusing with 21st Century London in a surreal melting pot. Watch it below.
Talking about her inspiration for the video Meilute says:
" The whole video is based on the circular motion of the archetype of the wheel of life. No matter what, the wheel will keep on spinning and producing new cycles; always the same, always different. Everything is part of the same experience at some point in its existence, meaning we are all on the same wheel spinning non-stop with our highs and lows."
