Single Review: Spyres - The Thing

As summer draws close to ending for another year and Autumn creeps it's way into our consciousness, we begin to retreat to our homes to escape the cold. Spending her time watching films and catching up with new music this time of year, Niamh Rowley took the time to listen to the new single from Scottish band SPYRES as she battens down the hatches for the inevtibale drop in temperature around the corner.

Glasgow-based four-piece SPYRES return with new single 'The Thing'off their forthcoming EP Karaoke Sellout, due to be released on Novermber 24th. Having already released two singles off the EP already - entitled 'Money' and 'Sleep Forever' - I can't wait to see what else they have to offer.

Taking an indie pop approach to their music, the band are starting to move out of their Glasgow comfort zone and seem to be succeeding after their recent 7-date tour. With angsty vocals and kickass melodies that worm their way into your head, the foursome consisting of Keira McGuire (Vocals/Guitar), Emily Downie (Guitar), Jude Curran (Bass) and Alex White (Drums) have gained some appreciative fans in the music press. Radio 1, Radio X and Kerrang! have all showed the band considerable support in 2023.

Just seconds into 'The Thing', we're greeted by a quirky little guitar riff that makes me almost instantly want to get up and boogie with reckless abandon. If this was the effect it had on me - currently sitting alone writing this in my room - then I can only imagine what it'll be doing to crowds of adoring fans. With energetic hooks and pent-up vocals, I was sold by the very first verse.

Finding myself coming back for another listen after listening to their other tracks, I have nothing but praise for what they've created here. The lyrical content is delivered with an almost conversational style; it feels as though McGuire is talking directly to you, trying to grab your attention through the speakers. It's a talent that not many have nailed down, but they no doubt do.

Reminding me of acts like Coach Party, Bitters and Lauren Hibberd, I can see why with songs like 'The Thing' the band are very much on the rise. So, whether you have found out about this lovely bunch from this piece or are a long term fan, this single is another step on the ladder to bigger things.

SPYRES EP Karaoke Sellout is released on November 24th and you can follow the band and find out more on FacebookX and Instagram
