Single Review: Momma - Medicine

NYC's Momma are the latest to sign for the tastemakers at Lucky Number (Dream Wife, Sunflower BeanJay Som) and are hotly-tipped to be the next band to break big from the City. Ryan Doyle Elward waded through the hype and gave these insights.

Momma puts out their latest single ‘Medicine’ with noticeably new locomotion and a bit more polish. In 2020’s 'Two of Me', as well as in earlier work, the tracks tend to be bimodal - bouncing between a couple of chords in the background while a perseverative guitar part dwells atop, tied in like a series of knots throughout.

The texture of ‘Medicine’ is smoothed, shifting to make the lyrics a component of high frequency, where “I’m on a bender and I’ll never stop” and other lines are repeated to the effect of reinforcing their themes.

In past releases, Momma has remained just above the relatively low-action recordings of many Bedroom-Pop performers – with whom they share some qualities – showing greater similarity to artists like Speedy Ortiz (especially ‘Raising the Skate’), being at times both ethereal and energetic. The breathy echoing of “uh huh, uh huh” is Pixies-reminiscent (‘Gigantic’ or later in ‘Tame’) and gives way to the indelible “you’ll be my medicine”.

The narrative in ‘Medicine’ illustrates the irrefutable fact for how people’s lives often become increasingly human-centered in an effort to feel whole. While romantic attachment is the focus of this song, it is just as true for all kinds of kinship and connection, family and friends.

Many aren’t conscious of their needs and the extent to which they rely on others for them, so thespace between these poles widens by diminishing returns.I never really ask a lot are thereby words emblematic of the uncertainty in deciding for yourself the depth of your dependency.
