New Video: Blokeacola - Mayonnaise Lifestyle

There's a side to life that we should be starting to embrace more. We should be laughing at the absurdity of the nuances of existence; the sheer fact we're wandering aimlessly on a spinning rock wandering aimlessly in an infinite universe that one day will consume us all should make us a bit more willing to live in the moment. Of course, it's never THAT straight forward. The stress of everyday endeavours can consume our every waking thought and several of the subconsious ones for that matter.

Pop music can certainly help with that, and doing his bit to lighten the mood of such an anxious age is Blokeacola. Born and raised in Wales, but now living in China, Blokeacola makes the kind of surreal psychedelic pop that could only come from an upbringing in Wales; I swear there's something in the water. His music is cramed full of idiosyncrasies that poke fun at the human experience without ever wanting to - to paraphrase Orange Juice here - rip it up and start again.

In Autumn 2023, he released his most ambitious work to date after previous work had seen positve reviews and plays on BBC Radio Wales, 6 Music and Amazing Radio. Double album Quasars and Fluff contains thirty (yes... 30) tracks and has drawn comparisons to The Beatles at their most playful; high praise indeed. On the challanges of making the record, Blokeacola said:

I'm a big fan of 'The White Album' so I guess I've always wanted to have a go at making a double album. However, as an artist that has made music for a few years now, be it in different guises, I only felt ready to begin such a crazy feat during the second half of 2022. I was excited by how trying to write and record this many tracks might affect my creative process. I hoped it would lead to a wider range of material and give me a chance to indulge in more experimentation. After getting more familiar with my home studio over the course of the two previous E.Ps, the time felt right.

Making the deliberate decision to only release singles to streaming services in 2024, 'Mayonnaise Lifestyle' is the second of those singles after Jan 2024's 'Famous Doctor Pavillion'. The title of the track comes from Blokeacola's 3 year old daughter's love of mayonaise, but lyrically it's a stream of consciousness that encompasses lounging around in your pants, Elliot Smith's teenage mullet and a self-professed lack of knowledge about mushrooms. Yes, you did read that correctly.
