Single Review: Vala - Fishes

Manchester band Vala have been slowly building a fanbase around the city with a collection of singles that have seen them create a confident brand of indie pop. They've recently worked with Strokes producer Gordon Raphael and we got Niamh Rowley to take  a listen to the latest of these singles 'Fishes'.

Music is more commonly surrounding us in our daily activities than ever before, whether we acknowledge its presence or not. It could simply be something that keeps you company in the car or on public transport, in the shops whilst you’re browsing around or maybe it just comes as a recommendation from a friend. But how often exactly do we pay full attention to it?

With most tracks in the collective consciousness coming from similar genres or the usual big named artists we tend not to broaden our horizons to what’s waiting just a little further out, begging to be heard. Well here comes a new piece from Manchester locals Vala. Bringing us a fun-loving track entitled ‘Fishes’, blending the best elements of indie with a futuristic pop sound, it scratches an itch in my brain I wasn’t even aware was there.

The four-piece band draws upon different musical elements to create the most upbeat, striking melody you can't get out of your head. A funky little guitar riff reverberates off a steady drum beat and you feel yourself wanting to have a little foot tap along with it or even a dance break. I'm not one to judge either option. It's a laid back track that is reminiscent of Leicester band Easylife, it gives off an effortless vibe that is easy to tune into. I do, however, find myself wishing it was longerand an urge to discover more in this genre as a result.

Exploring different ways of layering their vocals alongside the instruments to prevent either one becoming overpowered allows for a smooth and streamlined track I'm positive many will love. Introducing us to a futuristic style of music gives us newfound hope for what’s to come and what exactly is left out there to be discovered. It provides an all-round good atmosphere and encourages the start of a productive day.

Being the second track in a run of five to be released by the band, I'm sure the excitement grows not only for fans but the band as well as they start to gain the recognition they so rightfully deserve. Previously released track ‘Bleed Together’ follows a similar vibe to ‘Fishes’; it’s short and snappy but extremely catchy and it’s clear they’ve found solace in this style and are showing off just how comfortable they are in their own skin.

Gearing up for a return to their hometown headlining at the Deaf institute in Manchester on Nov 17th.  With a support slot filled by Foxglove, a good night is already guaranteed. A definite one to watch out for and I highly recommend following along as they take their blossoming career to the next level.
