Single Review: two blinks, i love you - Loveseat

The new project from Liverpool-based songwriter Liam Brown, two blinks, i love you has caught the attention of the music press with the likes of The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, DORK, and Pitchfork showing the project some considerable attention in recent months. With the release of his debut EP today (June 2nd) Niamh Rowley took a listen to his recent single ''Loveseat' to find out more about this intriguing artist.

With fresh talent embarking on the scene via socials, busking, and live performances, it can almost become overwhelming when figuring out where to turn your attention. The sheer volume of tracks released on a weekly basis in the UK alone is staggering. May I introduce to you the Liverpool-based singer-songwriter Liam Brown aka two blinks, i love you, and his brand new single ‘Loveseat.’ The single is released ahead of his debut EP entitled EP 1 on June 2nd. You may be aware of his former incarnation as Pizzagirl; this new era explores a different aesthetic and direction, one which is exciting to see progress.

‘Loveseat’ is the fourth song to be dropped from the EP before its release. Following on from previous tracks with the primary theme of a breakup and how we deal with the aftermath. Providing an earthy style beat and soothing vocals it makes for easy listening.

Taking an acoustic approach allows for a fully immersive experience, I feel as though I truly get to hear and digest each line as it was intended. It’s stripped back and raw, which sadly isn’t something I feel we get to see much of due to the growing commercialisation of music; it’s refreshing and enjoyable. Brown has a talent that shines with playful exuberance, experimenting with different sounds and techniques all whilst keeping it engaging and grounded.

There’s something genuinely quite homely about this particular track, whether that be due to the catchy lyrics, or the calming melody throughout. Around three minutes into the track, we see a shift from the original melody to see the introduction of a very folk-style beat. Coming in for an instrumental slot with a banjo and violin provided us with something we didn’t initially anticipate but it most definitely complimented and elevated the track. It’s rather reminiscent to me of a campfire scene where everyone’s just happy to be in each other’s company and living free at the moment.

It almost seems quite ironic that a song that focuses on gently mourning and reflecting on the loss of a previous relationship could connotate something happier. But in my eyes, it’s safe to say it’s worth the listen and I cannot recommend it enough - whether it's your initial genre interest in music or not - it has an enduring quality that warrants further investigation. Who knows, you may just find a new favourite artist.
